In 2014, Wales Co-operative Centre commissioned a directory of social businesses in Wales and the production of a report ‘Social Businesses in Wales: The State of the Sector’. The report highlighted that social businesses in Wales contribute £1.7bn to the economy and employ in the region of 38,000 people.

Social Business Wales, a project funded by Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund and delivered by Wales Co-operative Centre, is about to start a major research project to update its social business directory and assess the current state of the sector. Since 2014, many things have changed and Social Business Wales would like to speak to as many social businesses as possible to get a feel for the size of the sector, your ambitions for your business and the challenges you face.

This new research will build on data collected in Autumn 2014 and will be carried out by Wavehill. It will feed directly into the Business Wales Directory giving the social businesses which participate a valuable opportunity to grow their markets and win new contracts. The information will also be used to inform the development of policy and future support activity by the Wales Co-operative Centre and other external organisations.
